What is payroll?
Payroll is the process of making the necessary salary payments to employees. At the same time, it also includes the payments made for social security contributions and it is a multi-component process, handled by any employer (i.e., company) operating in Belgium.
What are the components of payroll in Belgium?
Our Belgian lawyers list the main ones below:
- Monthly salary: the monthly pay agreed in the employment agreement. It includes the base pay and the gross pay (total earnings before deductions, including base pay and any bonuses, if applicable);
- Social security contributions: the base employer’s contribution is 30.57% of 1.08 times the gross salary for blue-collar workers and 25% of gross salary for white-collar employees.
Are there special provisions for social security contributions in Belgium?
Yes. The experts at our law firm in Belgium would like to highlight the fact that some elements of a salary package can be subject to special social security contributions. Examples include:
- A carbon dioxide solidarity tax for the private use of company cars;
- Contributions due on the employer’s contribution for group insurance;
- Contribution for occupational pensions on extra-legal pension premiums that exceed certain amounts.
Since 1 January 2026 basic employer contributions are capped for very high salaries (above EUR 88,434 gross per quarter from 1 July 2026); there is no cap linked to the company’s income.

How can a payroll services provider help me?
A payroll services provider is another company that offers services and solutions for Belgian companies that require assistance with handling the payments they make to their employees and to the Belgian authorities for having hired employees in the country.
The following services are available:
- Payroll-related calculations (including, but not limited to, determining bonuses, holiday or sick leave pay, and withholding taxes);
- Making the mandatory social security contributions and submissions;
- Administrative tasks related to a company’s employees (bonuses, allowances, deductions, time credit, overtime calculations, etc.).
What are the advantages of outsourcing payroll in Belgium?
Some of the benefits include:
- Compliance guarantee: payroll processing handled externally by a professional allows Belgian companies to make sure that their compliance with the social security contribution payments and submissions is complete and correct, thus avoiding penalties;
- Timely payments: a company that properly handles payroll can make timely salary payments and avoid any miscalculations (such as mistakes that may appear when calculating bonuses, overtime pay, or deductions);
- Cost reductions (in some cases): depending on the size of the company, it might be justifiable to outsource payroll in Belgium, rather than have an internal department that handles the mandatory payments.
